A workshop still living in the last century

In Moutiers en Puisaye, in Yonne in Burgundy, the old Poterie de la Bâtisse make you discover the atmosphere of its workshop still living at the beginning of the last century.

Days are given rhythme by the work of “marcheux” who walk on clay to prepare it, the kneading of clay to throw it in thousands of pieces.

Today, you can still discover this traditional work. You will see the potters, the old machines like kick wheel or block wheel, modern wheels and “the calibreuse” that are witnesses of the evolution in the ceramic world.

The traditionnal enamalling with a ladle and the firing by the potter shows the transformation of the pieces by high temperature ( 1280°^c). Two wood kilns testify here of the huge work to do : a “four moufle” of 1900 for flamed earthware pots and the very big lying kiln, Historical Monument of eighteenth century for salted stoneware pots.
